Following a healthy eating plan can come so easy throughout the week when you are busy with work and have a routine to follow. But for most of us when Friday comes back around we tend to drink a few too many cocktails, indulge in sugary treats and skip the routine we follow on week days. Don’t get it twisted, there is nothing wrong with indulging but definitely within moderation. Here are some of our best tips for staying healthy over this upcoming July Long Weekend.


Eating breakfast everyday, keeps the doctor away


A healthy breakfast kick-starts your metabolism and fuels your body for the day. It also sets the foundation for how the remainder of your eating for the day may or may not pan out. Fresh fruit, smoothies, oatmeal, yogurt or even whole wheat toast. Eating something satisfying and filling at the same time will help control those cravings for sweets later on in the day.


Stick to the basics & plan ahead


Plan ahead by shopping for food during the week. By doing so early on your mindset is in a healthy place. You are likely to pick up the healthy foods you grab for during the week. Nothing has to be fancy, as we’ve mentioned before cottage eating is simple. Just be mindful ahead of time so that your meals are already planned out and healthy for when you do get hungry.


Mix in a water people!


A lot of us use alcohol as a way to relax and socialize throughout the weekend and this is generally where most of our weekend calories come from. Nothing wrong with drinking a few yummy docktails with friends, but something we suggest every so often is mixing in a water or even sugar-free drink just to refuel in between. I know we all hate to hear this one, but it’s true. Just be mindful as alcohol can be a super quick way to take on some unwanted calories over the weekend.


Get movin'


Make the most of the extra free time you have during your weekend and squeeze in some physical activity. Especially when at the cottage, the possibilities are endless. Grab your friends and go for a hike, do some gardening, get out on the lake and wakeboard, stand up paddleboard or even kayak. Anything you can do to get your body moving is going to help you in staying healthy and active this weekend.


Moderation is your best friend 


If we can tell you anything, it’s going to be eat, drink and indulge in moderation. Depriving yourself tends to backfire so if you really want a treat, eat and enjoy it and then move on. Were only human and it is the weekend after all.
